BMW Motorrad have presented their first autonomous motorcycle at the BMW Motorrad Techday 2018. The autonomous BMW R 1200 GS made its debut for the assembled journalists at the BMW Group testing ground in Miramas, southern France.
The bike was developed by graduate engineer Stefan Hans and his team using synergies with BMW automobiles. It is able to independently drive off, accelerate, navigate the winding test track and slow down to a stop.
BMW Motorrad are keen to stress, that they are not aiming to build a completely independent motorcycle rather than use technology in development and testing of new functions and systems to make motorcycling safer, more comfortable and more enjoyable. The aim is to gather additional knowledge about riding dynamics in order to detect dangerous situations early on, and this way to be able to develop safety systems that aid the rider for instance while turning at intersections or when braking suddenly.
